The Bionator utilizes acrylic flanges on the upper and lower lingual tissue to protrude the mandible into the proper position. The acrylic can be trimmed inter-occlusally to all the vertical position of the posterior teeth to be controlled. Therefore the appliance can be trimmed to open, close or maintain the bite. Expansion screws can also be added to aid in arch development. Bionators are currently used for class II correction as well as retention for Herbst treatment.
Ideally, treatment starts should range from 8-11 years old, and recommended wear time is 21-23 hours a day. Treatment results in a change in overjet of one mm per month. You can add an optional expansion screw to stimulate the growth of the posterior teeth. Patients should clean daily with toothpaste to prevent the buildup of plaque and odor. Avoid Efferdent and other effervescent solutions, as it may erode components on the appliance. It is recommended to use products like DentaSoak or Retainer Splash.
