The appliance is best described as two blocks of acrylic resin, one fitted in the Maxillary arch and the other in the Mandibular arch, with inclined planes of 70 degrees. When the patient closes his/her jaws to occlude the dentition, the Mahony's twin block is carried forward by the action of the inclined planes into the desired new anterior relation that is at or near an incisor end-to-end relation.
Dr. Derek Mahony’s version of the Twin Block has the same advantages as the Clark Twin Block, with the exception that it provides more room for opening the vertical dimension. Advancement inclined planes placed in the cuspid area allow full freedom of movement when grinding the posterior pads.
